Championship and Cup Races

6.1 Championship. The following three Championships will be sailed each summer with Trophies awarded to the winners.

  • Class A. Boats 27″ to 36″ inclusive open to all sailors.
    Trophy presented by Mr R C R Twallin.
  • Class B. Boats. 21″ to 26″ inclusive open to sailors who have not reached the age of 18 by 1 August.
    Trophy presented by Mr P W S Boult.
  • Class C. Boats 15″ to 20″ inclusive open to all sailors who have not reached the age of 14 by 1 August.
    Trophy presented by Gateway Building Society.

Qualification. To qualify to sail in the Class B or C Championship, a boat must have won one qualifying race and its sailor must have sailed that boat in two races during the season. To qualify for Class A Championship, the sailor must have won a race with the same boat in the current season.

Entry limit. No one may sail more than two boats in a Championship.

6.2 Cup Races. The tables below list the Special Races for which individual Trophies are awarded, together with entry qualification requirements and a description of the race.

Open to all boats between 32″ and 36″ inclusive. Two length heats. Four length final.
Golden Jubilee Challenge Cup Adult Sailors, aged 16 and over. Two lengths heats. Four length final.
De Lacroix Rose Bowl Presented by Mr George de Lacroix Home-made boats. (See definition) Two lengths heats. Four length final.
Nigel Boult Trophy Presented by Mrs Fiona Boult New Boats made since the end of the last season. Two lengths heats. Four length final.
Daphnia Cup
Presented by Miss H Balfour
Class C Boats Awarded to the boat that has attained the most points during the season but has not won the Class C Championship.
Walter Grint Trophy Class C Boats Awarded to the Runner-up for the Daphnia Cup
Pout Cup
Presented in memory of Mr Geoffrey Pout
Class B & C Boats and Sailors Modified Beat and Run
Quincentenary Salver Beach Yawls Two lengths heat. Four length final.
Collett Cup
Presented by Mr David Collett
Veteran Yachts Yachts made and sailed on the pond before 1957. Two lengths heat. Four length final.
Waveney Shield
Presented by Waveney District Council
Class B & C Burgee winners from the current summer season. Two lengths heat. Four length final.
Charter Plate
Presented by Southwold Town Council
A relay team of four boats of which two belong to the family entering the race. One length sailed by each boat as a relay race

May Bank Holiday Competitions

A pick-up regatta is generally arranged on the second Bank Holiday Monday in May. It will include the following cup races.

May Cup Children draw for boats nominated by the committee. Two lengths heat. Four length final.
Norwich and Peterborough Building Society Class B Shield Class B boats made as part of David Collett Project in Southwold. Two lengths heat. Four length final.
Norwich and Peterborough Building Society Class C Shield Class C boats made as part of David Collett Project in Southwold. Two lengths heat. Four length final.
